The Rotary Club of The Woodlands had a panel of outstanding, high school coaches as our speaker today.

The Superintendent of Conroe Independent School District, our very own Dr. Stockton, kicked off our program.
  • Caney Creek High School coach, Steve Svendsen kicked things off.A transplant for South Dakota, Coach Svendsen is new to the head coaching job at Caney Creek but is very familiar with the job having coached for more than three decades in the sport.Their first game is tonight, at Porter High School. The theme for the year is changing the culture – believe that things can change on the field, in the classroom and in life. This will be critical for the team that is pretty young with two returning starters on offense and four on defense.
  • Conroe High School coach Robert Walker commented on the fact that football in Texas is such a community event with most of the school being involved in some way – the band, the cheerleaders, Golden Girls and ROTC have all been preparing, along with the football team for this season.Their opener is against Aldine Nimitz tomorrow night, bringing a very talented team with a new coach who was extremely successful in his previous supporting roles. They field a junior heavy football team with a good number of returners.
  • Oak Ridge North High School coach Derrick Rush is going into his fourth year with the program.Building off a freshman performance of 1-9 to two subsequent 7-4 seasons, he sees good things ahead. They have learned a lot from their recent scrimmages and look forward to their opening game on Saturday versus Katy’s Morton Ranch. They are also a young team, returning four starters on both sides of the ball.
  • College Park High School coach Richard Carson has 31 years in coaching under his belt, but he is still nervous about their opener tonight against Pearland – one of the best schools in the state.Preparation and practicing like they are going to play – even including TV time outs and the National Anthem into their practice – is key to getting his team ready for the season.
  • Woodlands High School coach Mark Schmid is another three decade veteran of coaching.Proud to be celebrating the 40th year of Highlander Football this year he mentioned that their home opener, on Friday versus Cy Fair, is already sold out.He thanks CISD for the support that they give to the schools – support that has allowed the school to turn away no student that wants to play fielding multiple teams across the junior and high school levels – 166 games to be played across all the teams. He believes that they have a strong offense, built off the line with a number of their six returning starters and a strong defensive secondary made up of a number of their five returning defensive players.
  • John Cooper School coach Brent Landrum is pleased to be ushering tin the 5th year of football at the school. They have a lot of returners on both sides of the call. They are as strong in the classroom as they are on the field. They will be opening against Woodlands Christian on Friday night.
  • Woodlands Christian Academy coach Mike Crocker is honored to have been name head coach for this year’s program.A strong squad, anchored by 10 returning seniors and new facilities will make this week’s opener against the John Cooper School, as well as the whole season exciting. He urges everyone to come out and see their new stadium.
All the coaches mentioned in one way or another the honor that it is to play in the lives of these young men.  Sentiments such as
  • forming and building of character in young men who are the future fathers, husbands and leaders
  • these young men are great leaders on the field and Godly men of character
  • what it really means to them that they are called “coach”
  • these kids learn how to work hard, deal with adversity and get back up when they are knocked down
  • we are building men in service of others
Good luck to all the coaches and their teams as they start their 2015 Seasons this week.
